How a WhatsApp link works
WhatsApp has an official link format: wa.me. When someone taps https://wa.me/447700900123, a chat with that number opens without saving it to their contacts. If you add a message, it appears in the text box and the customer only has to press send.
The number must be in international format, without the plus sign, without leading zeros and without spaces. The tool does this for you: pick the country, type the number the way you normally write it, and you get a correct link.
Where to use the link and QR code
- Website: a "Message us on WhatsApp" button next to your contact details, or a floating button. The tool gives you the HTML.
- Google Business Profile: in your description or posts.
- Instagram and Facebook: in your bio or contact button.
- Print: a QR code on flyers, business cards, menus, the apartment door or your van.
Write a starting message that gets enquiries
Keep it short and written from the customer's point of view. Good examples:
- Holiday rental: "Hi, is the apartment free from __ to __ for __ people?"
- Salon or clinic: "Hi, I'd like to book an appointment for…"
- Trades and services: "Hi, I need a quote for… Location: …"
Use a different message for each source, for example one for your website and one for a flyer. That way you can see at a glance where an enquiry came from.
Track WhatsApp enquiries
Clicks on a WhatsApp button can be tracked as conversions in Google Analytics and Google Ads. This matters if you advertise: without it you can't see which campaigns bring messages. For our clients we track every WhatsApp click, call and email as an enquiry.
