Work hours calculation

Choose what you want to calculate.

If the end is earlier than the start, the calculator treats it as an overnight shift. Monthly hours are an average (52 weeks ÷ 12 months).

How to calculate hours worked

Subtract the start time from the end time and deduct unpaid breaks. From 8:00 to 16:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours. For an overnight shift from 22:00 to 6:00 the calculator adds 24 hours to the end time, giving 8 hours.

Hours and minutes vs. decimal hours

Payroll often uses decimal hours. To convert minutes to decimals, divide by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 hours; 20 minutes = 0.33 hours. Mixing the two formats is the most common time card mistake: 7.45 is not 7 hours 45 minutes, it is 7 hours 27 minutes.

Monthly hours

A month does not have exactly four weeks. The average is 52 weeks ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks, so a 40-hour week equals about 173 hours per month. The calculator uses this average for monthly totals and pay.

Adding up a list of times

In the second tab you can paste a list of durations, one per line, in either format (7:45 or 7.75). The calculator returns the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, and flags any lines it cannot read.
